The MICHU FOUNDATION
Established in honor of the remarkable legacy of Ambassador Hailegiorgis Tassew, a visionary educator and skilled diplomat who dedicated his life to the empowerment of youth, the protection of human rights, and the advancement of global collaboration.
Born on December 12, 1939, in Ethiopia,
Hailegiorgis pursued his education in the United States during a period of profound social and
political change. His academic focus on international relations, political science, and economics
shaped his commitment to social justice and the transformative power of education.
As headmaster of Medhane Alem Higher Education Preparatory School, Hailegiorgis became a
protector and advocate for his students during a time of political unrest under the Derg regime.
He courageously shielded young activists from persecution, leaving an indelible mark as a
compassionate and principled leader. Later, as Ethiopia’s ambassador to the Vatican, Spain,
and France, he represented his nation with integrity, fostering diplomatic ties during a
challenging the Cold War era.
Ambassador Hailegiorgis Tassew's enduring contributions to education, diplomacy, and social
change inspires the foundation’s mission to create opportunities for the next generation of
leaders, promote global understanding, and advocate equality. His life stands as a testament to
the power of knowledge, courage, and compassion in shaping a better future for all.
